Sherlock Holmes (2009)   5 comments

I know I know it has taken me far too long but last week I eventually got to see the new Sherlock Holmes film!! And oh lordy was it worth the wait, if you could have seen me in the dark cinema you would have seen me wearing a permanent Cheshire cat smile. I would have seen the film a lot earlier however its release date coincided with me being at my Moms where there is only an old one screen theatre, it’ll be another month before they get Holmes, then returned home to find my Dad had gone without…actually everyone seemed to have seen it without me. Fortunately after much searching I found a friend who hadn’t seen it, thank the lord for Kayleigh, who I toddled off with to the Odeon with the Orange Wednesday deal which was even better.

I’m not actually a huge fan of Jude Law although that might be due to his shady personal life, I must admit he was very good in Steven Spielberg’s AI: Artificial Intelligence some years ago now. Would I have pictured him as Watson not in a million years however I wasn’t just pleasantly surprised at his performance I actually loved his performance! He really pulled poor old Watson out of well the conception that he is some old fat man, instead of a middle-aged ex-army doctor which is how Law played him much to my pleasure.  On the other hand I am already well and truly in love with Robert Downey Jnr, yes I know he is almost old enough to be my Dad, but he very good-looking and rather amusing as well haha. However I don’t just moon over him he is also a good actor, I particularly enjoyed Iron Man great film and I eagerly await the sequel to be released this year. Downey Jnr was pretty much everything I imagine Holmes to be good-looking, eccentric, arrogant and incomprehensibly intelligent plus he can fist fight in this adaptation. Guy Ritchie with his reputation had to bring violence to the film although I think he pulled it off well it wasn’t over the top gory violence as you would expect from him, the fist fighting and general everyman for himself brawls were I felt very in keeping with the time period. My favourite scene was when Holmes was fighting the giant and got hold of that electrified instrument which he kept electrocuting the giant across the room with haha very amusing.

I am going to guess you’ve all seen this film, as I was late seeing it? Did you enjoy it? Or do you disagree? I can’t describe what a school girl glee I got when it was revealed that the hidden character was Professor Moriarty! I eagerly anticipate a sequel if Robert Downey Jnr can keep himself out of trouble long enough :-)

  1. I saw this recently and while I enjoyed the characters and their relationships very much, I just didn’t enjoy the mystery plot line. This was mainly because I had trouble following it. I was pretty tired at the time so this may not be the movie’s fault, but I found myself asking my partner “Wait… why are they here again? How did they work out they needed to come here?” I was a bit disappointed I didn’t like it more, but I’ll still be interested in seeing a sequel if one is made.

    • As you may have guessed I loved this film, however I can see how it could be dampened if you were tired. Far too much to follow, Holmes mind is hard to fathom when your wide awake let alone tired!
