Sunday Reflection #50: Jubilee and Bicentenary   7 comments

Hello my fellow bookworms! I hope you are all well. If you are in the UK like me hope you are all cosy inside your homes, as it is has been cold out there! I must admit to some girlish excitement as the snow fell, only because I knew I had no where important to be, and so could instead curl up in a blanket. It didn’t last long as my boyfriend’s car failed its m.o.t so I had to dig my car out and pick him up (bless) but still nice while it did. What has the weather been like else where in the world? Worse or better?

So what is with my title for this reflection? Well first things first the 6th February 2012 marked the beginning of our Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee year which means she has now been ruling for 60 years. Congratulations to her, she is now only the second monarch of the UK, Canada, Australia, and some Common Wealth realms to have reached this impressive milestone, the only other being Queen Victoria. I know not everyone is particularly endowed by the royal family but I am quite a big fan. I like the sense of history that comes with having a monarch and a royal family. I feel they are great embassadors, and also create a lot of tourism for our country. Plus I feel so odd when I think about having a president instead! So with that in mind I wish our Queen happiness and health, and long may she continue to rule.

Now a more bookworm orientated milestone event, the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens was this week! In other words on the 7th February 2012 old Charles turned 200 well if he were actually alive he would have anyway. I have noticed quite a few blogs have been running features about him or reading some of his work to celebrate this event. What this event reminds me of is that I have read a shockingly low amount of Dickens’ work, and by shockingly low, I mean one. Yes just one and that was Nicholas Nickleby, which I remember enjoying but for some reason never went in search of more. This may be something I need to rectify soon, could perhaps start by re-reading Nicholas Nickleby as I do still have my copy?

Apart from these events, and the weather the past few weeks have been good but pretty ordinary for me. What about you? What have you been doing, reading, watching, or perhaps celebrating?

  5. I envy you the snow! It’s been pretty cold and miserable around here too, but all we get is unpleasant cold rain :P

    • Yeah cold rain is just depressing, and I bet it didn’t help your illness either. Atleast snow is nice to look at, although don’t mention the S word round my grandad he gets stressed out by it :-)
