Although I am still trapped in the house with my foot propped up, I am cheered by the expectations of all the small pleasures autumn brings: golden leaves, darker nights, woolly tights, warming soups and curling up in a blanket to enjoy reading something suitably mysterious and comforting. The latter of which is exactly what R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril is all about!
The idea of this event is to spend September and October reading books from the following categories:
Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror and Supernatural.
There are also different levels of participation to choose from, including a one-book option for those readers who don’t want to commit to too much. As usual, I am signing up for Peril the First, which means:
Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (our very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Shirley Jackson or Tananarive Due…or anyone in between.
With a quick glance over my bookshelves and in my Kindle’s to-be-read folder here are some of the books I could choose from:
- The Moor by Laurie R. King
- Council by Snorri Kristjansson
- Agatha Raisin and the Wellspring of Death by M. C. Beaton
- The Poison Bed by E C Fremantle
- Cold Fire by Dean Koontz
- The Comedy Club by Peter Bartram
- The Moonspinners by Mary Stewart
- Crooked House by Agatha Christie
It is highly unlikely I would ever read all these books and I am not restricting myself exclusively to these books either, however I do love making a list of possibles! And hopefully this event should be just what the doctored ordered to cheer me up and get my reading mojo back.

That looks like a great list. I have read and enjoyed The Poison Bed and I loved The Moonspinners. You’ve reminded me that I need to catch up with the Laurie R King series – I’ve still only read the first two.
Helen, I am particularly hoping to read The Moonspinners, because it has been too long since I read one of Stewart’s wonderful suspense novels. The Poison Bed has also been languishing in my Kindle’s to-be-read folder for ages! Also similar to you Helen, I have only read three of Laurie R. King’s mystery series and really must get back to it soon. 🙂

I hope you’ll read the Mary Stewart novel. I loved her books years ago and don’t recall reading the one you have listed. I also vote for Cold Fire. Until just a few years ago, I read everything Koontz wrote.

I think there is a high possibility I will read the Mary Stewart novel, especially as it has been too long since I read one of her wonderful suspense novels. The Koontz novel is high on my list too, as it would be perfect towards my What’s in a Name challenge too. 🙂
As much as I enjoyed some of the challenges in which I participated, I stopped when I cut my blogging schedule back to only reviewing books in a monthly wrap-up post. (mini-reviews, at that) Now I just enjoy seeing what others have read for the challenges. 🙂

Well, yesterday I picked up my copy of The Testaments, Margaret Atwood’s new one, a sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. I guess it doesn’t quite fit this challenge but it should be creepy enough. Good luck with your list!
Judy, I hope you will enjoy reading The Testaments and I think as a dystopian novel it is verging on dark fantasy which does count for this challenge. Also thank you, I am looking forward to seeing what I read off my possibles list. 🙂
