Good morning, fellow bookworms. It is ‘Hump Day’ Wednesday which means we are halfway through the working week (if you’re at work) and it is time for WWW Wednesday! A weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words, which simply involves answering the following Three Ws:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?

Currently Reading: The magical, historical-fiction, The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale, which is about Cathy a teenage runaway who takes a job in Papa Jack’s Emporium, where they make toys that capture the imagination of children and adults alike. I bought this for my mum for Christmas and she loved it so much she has passed it back for me to try, and so far I am enjoying it a lot! I am nearing the end now, but with the craziness of life at the minute I am finding it hard to concentrate for too long on my reading.
Which is why, I haven’t picked up the non-fiction The Favourite: Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough by Ophelia Field – a history of the life of this powerful, glamorous and controversial favourite of Queen Anne – in a while, because it would need much more brain power than I currently have to spare. From what I have read, it has been interesting to find out more of the real history behind the recent, critically-acclaimed film, The Favourite (2018), starring the brilliant Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz.
However I did recently treat myself to a beautiful New International Version of the Bible, as I don’t own a copy of this translation and it is the one my church uses; all of which we were discussing in my church’s small Alpha group, before we had to suspend our meetings. It is also a slightly larger Bible that lies flat when open, making it easier to read and study from. So this week, in my new Bible, I have been reading the book of Joshua, a history of the Israelites’ journey out of the wilderness, hoping for some encouragement in these hard times.
Recently Finished: Sadly this week I haven’t finished any books or managed to share any reviews. With the continued social-distancing and new lockdown rules, I really must use the extra time for reading and catching up on my review writing.
Reading Next: Probably either The Watsons or Lady Susan by Jane Austen, two short/unfinished works off my Classics Club list. I am eager to read more from this collection, after enjoying Sanditon, and with them being short it will be great to get my classics numbers up.

I hope you find pleasure and reassurance in your new bible. It’s mainly the NIV I use myself, although I also like the King James for the language, or the Message for a more simple, modern translation. The book of Joshua is a good parallel to our own situation in some ways, but I am finding great comfort in my faith at the moment, and the power of prayer.
Thank you, Alyson and I am pleased to hear you are finding great comfort in your faith, too. I also love the beautiful language in the King James Bible, however I would struggle to read it day-in-day-out, but it is good to compare passages between them.
The Toymakers sounds intriguing! I’m reading SO much it isn’t even funny, but I’m mainly enjoying The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. It’s my first title by her.
Amy, The Toymakers is very intriguing and darkly magical – I managed to read a big chunk of it last night, so may actually finish it today! I am very pleased to hear your reading is going so well and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on The Age of Innocence, as I am of yet to read anything by Edith Wharton.🙂

The Toymakers sounds great! I’ve been struggling to concentrate on reading and blogging too over the last few weeks. Despite having so much more time in the house I feel as though I’ve read much less than I normally would.
Helen, I am sorry to hear you are struggling to focus on reading and blogging, too – It’s these crazy times we’re living in. However I did manage to read a big chunk of The Toymakers last night, so it is definitely helping. I hope you get into a new routine with your reading and blogging soon. 🙂
I really like the NIV – it’s the translation in my favorite study Bible. (NIV Life Application® Bible) Do you use BibleGateway.com? It’s such a great source for comparing translations.

I think we are all adjusting to how to use our time differently in this new reality. I find home to be really distracting and not conducive to my reading life right now. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed Sandition. That is on my list, because my mother keeps telling me to watch the PBS miniseries based on it, but I won’t until I have read the book (that is how I roll).
