– Currently Reading –
Kim by Rudyard Kipling (1901) – The classic adventure that is transporting me back to the exotic, bubbling, melting pot of India under British rule in the late 1800s, where we follow the antics of the young, Irish orphan, Kim after he befriends an aged Tibetan lama. This is just the escapist adventure my tired brain needed.
The Hairy Bikers’ One Pot Wonders by Si King & Dave Myers (2019) – A new cookbook from my favourite cooks (I already own ALL of their Hairy Dieters cookbooks). This one is a great selection of recipes celebrating the simple joys of one pot cooking, which is my favourite type of cooking!
Holy Bible – I have continued working my way through the gospel of John in the New Testament, and now that we’re on the school’s summer break, I have been able to start checking back in with my church’s Morning Prayer livestreams, where we have been dipping in and out of Samuel 2, Luke and the Psalms
– Recently Finished –
How To Pray by Pete Greig (2019) ** – Last week, I finished it this helpful Christian non-fiction, all ready for my church’s book club’s Zoom meeting, this coming Thursday. Greig brings his 20 years of experience to help answer the question everybody ultimately asks: how do I pray? A good read full of useful tips and inspiration.
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (2009) ** – Then earlier this week, I finally finished this beastie, award-winning, historical-fiction about the dramatic rise of Henry VIII’s right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell. A slow starter for me, but as I got use to the quirky style and got into the juicier details of the tale, the quicker I was able to read.
In the last week, I also posted my reviews for the romantic, time-travelling adventure, River Rising by John A. Heldt and the hilarious fourteenth Discworld novel, Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett. Please check these out if you haven’t already. Thank you! 😊

Having returned to and perused over my possibles list for my 10 Books of Summer Reading Challenge 2020, I am finding myself most drawn to the historical-fiction, The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor, which retells the real-life events of the “Cottingley Fairies” photographs.

Glad Wolf Hall ended up picking up for you! I hadn’t heard of The Cottingley Secret before, but I do remember seeing and hearing about that picture, so it sounds like a really interesting read! Also, Cottingley is really fun to say, which has nothing to do with the book, just something I noted as I was typing it. xD

I read Kim in college and I really like the concept of the main character being able to switch between worlds but not really fitting in either.

So glad to hear you enjoyed Kim. I agree it takes a while to get used to Hilary Mantel’s writing style but I’m happy you persisted and enjoyed Wolf Hall in the end. Do you plan to read the next book in the series?

Thank you, Cathy 😊 And yes, at some point, I think I would like to read the next book, Bring up the Bodies. I don’t have a copy of it yet though, so while I look for a copy, I have chance to recover from the first beast before I plough through another! 😅
I also read Wolf Hall recently. I did not love it as much as I had expected. I found it a tad dense and did not get on too well with the writing style. I really liked the story, but it did not quite hit the sweet spot for me. And I agree, one pot meals are the best kind of meals!

I’m hoping to read Wolf Hall next month! I love Tudor History so I’m hoping that I will really fly through it.
