WWW Wednesday | 29th July 2020

Good morning, fellow bookworms. It is ‘Hump Day’ Wednesday which means we are halfway through the working week (if you’re at work) and it is time for WWW Wednesday! A weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words, which simply involves answering the following Three Ws:

What are you currently reading?

What did you recently finish reading?

What do you think you’ll read next?

– Currently Reading –

Kim by Rudyard Kipling (1901) – The classic adventure that is transporting me back to the exotic, bubbling, melting pot of India under British rule in the late 1800s, where we follow the antics of the young, Irish orphan, Kim after he befriends an aged Tibetan lama. This is just the escapist adventure my tired brain needed.

The Hairy Bikers’ One Pot Wonders by Si King & Dave Myers (2019) A new cookbook from my favourite cooks (I already own ALL of their Hairy Dieters cookbooks). This one is a great selection of recipes celebrating the simple joys of one pot cooking, which is my favourite type of cooking!

Holy Bible – I have continued working my way through the gospel of John in the New Testament,  and now that we’re on the school’s summer break, I have been able to start checking back in with my church’s Morning Prayer livestreams, where we have been dipping in and out of Samuel 2, Luke and the Psalms

– Recently Finished –

How To Pray by Pete Greig (2019) ** – Last week, I finished it this helpful Christian non-fiction, all ready for my church’s book club’s Zoom meeting, this coming Thursday. Greig brings his 20 years of experience to help answer the question everybody ultimately asks: how do I pray? A good read full of useful tips and inspiration.

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel (2009) ** – Then earlier this week, I finally finished this beastie, award-winning, historical-fiction about the dramatic rise of Henry VIII’s right-hand man, Thomas Cromwell. A slow starter for me, but as I got use to the quirky style and got into the juicier details of the tale, the quicker I was able to read.

In the last week, I also posted my reviews for the romantic, time-travelling adventure, River Rising by John A. Heldt and the hilarious fourteenth Discworld novel, Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett. Please check these out if you haven’t already. Thank you! 😊

Having returned to and perused over my possibles list for my 10 Books of Summer Reading Challenge 2020, I am finding myself most drawn to the historical-fiction, The Cottingley Secret by Hazel Gaynor, which retells the real-life events of the “Cottingley Fairies” photographs.

Now over to you: What are you currently reading? What did you recently finish reading? What do you think you’ll read next?

Also please leave a link to your WWW posts in the comments, so I can come check them out, too!

  1. Glad Wolf Hall ended up picking up for you! I hadn’t heard of The Cottingley Secret before, but I do remember seeing and hearing about that picture, so it sounds like a really interesting read! Also, Cottingley is really fun to say, which has nothing to do with the book, just something I noted as I was typing it. xD

  2. Congratulations on finishing Wolf Hall! I agree that it’s not an easy book to get into. I’m pleased to hear you’re enjoying Kim.

    1. Haha thank you, Helen! I am feeling quite accomplished about getting through the beastie Wolf Hall! 😁 Nice to be reading something lighter like Kim now though! 😅

    1. Thank you Silver 😊 and I hope you’re able to get your hands on a copy of The Hairy Biker’s One Pot Wonders, as we ALL need less washing up in our lives! 😁

    1. Hello Melissa, thank you for popping over and commenting. Always lovely to hear from a new face. 😊 Glad I was able to remind you and I pray you will be able to dip into your Bible more. God bless 🙏

    1. Hey Sam, thank you for stopping by and commenting. Always lovely to hear from a new face. 😊 Pleased to hear you enjoyed reading Kim in college – I am racing through it now and loving the mix of cultures, faith and worlds. 😃

    1. Thank you, Cathy 😊 And yes, at some point, I think I would like to read the next book, Bring up the Bodies. I don’t have a copy of it yet though, so while I look for a copy, I have chance to recover from the first beast before I plough through another! 😅

  3. I also read Wolf Hall recently. I did not love it as much as I had expected. I found it a tad dense and did not get on too well with the writing style. I really liked the story, but it did not quite hit the sweet spot for me. And I agree, one pot meals are the best kind of meals!
