πŸ“– The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel ββ

The Case For ChristBack on my holiday in the rolling Kent countryside, I took my time over the Christian non-fiction The Case For Christ by the bestselling author and former legal editor of The Chicago Tribune, Lee Strobel. This is the second book by Strobel I have now read, with the first being The Case For Grace, which I read in 2018 for my Church’s much-missed book club.

Strobel has become best known for his β€˜The Case for…’ books, where he famously uses his journalistic skills to explore the evidence for different aspects of the Christian faith. In this book, specifically focusing on the central figure of Jesus Christ, Strobel retraces his own spiritual steps from atheism, where his cross-examination of a dozen experts, who are all recognised authorities in their fields of history, science, archaeology, philosophy and manuscript studies, brought him to faith.

Some of these challenging questions include: ‘How reliable is the New Testament?’, ‘Does evidence for Jesus exist outside of the Bible?’, and ‘Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event?’. All interesting and important questions, and even as an already practicing Christian, I enjoyed hearing the views, arguments and evidence given by Strobel’s varied choice of scholars.

However, while the book’s blurb describes this as reading like a ‘fast-paced novel’, I found this a detailed and slow read, that I felt I needed to give myself time to mull over, reflect on and compare with my own beliefs. Also I wouldn’t agree that Strobel’s line of questioning was either particularly ‘tough’ or ‘point-blank’, instead he seemed to give in and have his mind changed very easily. This shouldn’t take away from the content though, and it certainly helped strengthen my own understanding and conviction in my faith.

All in all, I found The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel an interesting and detailed dig into the evidence for Jesus the man and Messiah, but maybe not the hard-hitting, conversion read I was expecting. I am still very keen to read more of Strobel’s books. Good read ⭐⭐

  1. I have this book sitting on my shelf (unread). It sounds like it would be a good one to just dip into as I have the time.
