Good morning, fellow bookworms. We have reached Tuesday and that can only mean one thing: it is time for Top Ten Tuesday! A weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, who each week assigns a new topic to inspires us to create a top ten list based on it. This week’s topic is:
The Ten Most Recent Additions to My Bookshelf
Having just celebrated Christmas and my birthday, I have plenty of bookish gifts I have received to share with you.
First, I gave my dad a book, wish list for Christmas and bless him, I received all but one from my list:
1, 2, 3 & 4. The Inheritance Cycle: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr & Inheritance by Christopher Paolini – Paolini’s tetralogy of young adult, high-fantasy novels set in the fictional world of Alagaësia. I read Eragon and Eldest some years ago now, so it will be great to re-read them and then finish the series.
5. The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places by Neil Oliver – An expansive history of Britain told through a hundred historic sights of interest, written by my favourite, long-haired Scotsman and historian, Neil Oliver. After seeing his fascinating and amusing talk at a local theatre on this book, I immediately wanted it!
6. The Book of Dust by Philip Pullman (La Belle Sauvage: Vol 1) – The first book in Pullman’s new, fantasy trilogy, which expands His Dark Materials trilogy and furthers the adventures of Lyra Belacqua. Being a big fan of his previous series and having just loved the BBC’s TV adaptation, I thought it was high-time I read this, too.
Also over the Christmas holiday I got my hands on these:
7. Quick Cooking by Mary Berry – A new cookbook from the national treasure that is Mary Berry. My stepdad won this for me through the Postcode Lottery, while I was staying at my mum’s over the festive period. I was that excited about it, I have already finished reading it.
8. Island of the Mad by Laurie R. King – On one of my shopping trips, during my time off, I spotted this: the fifteenth Marry Russell & Sherlock Holmes mystery. In the January sales it was only £1!
Finally, but certainly not least, my dad got me these for my birthday:
9 & 10. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire & Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Audiobooks – The fourth and fifth audio instalments of J. K. Rowling’s books, narrated by the marvellous Stephen Fry. I actually only asked for one of these, but my dad found a cheaper deal for this twin pack on The Book People website. Lucky me!
So my cup brimmeth over with exciting goodies for me to get stuck into this year! In fact, I think this is my best Christmas and birthday bookish haul ever!

Oooh, Harry Potter on audiobook! I’m not a big audiobook fan, but I have listened to the third Harry Potter and I really enjoyed it! What a great haul!

Dedra, I have to agree that actually I am not a big audiobook fan either: I don’t listen to any new books. Harry Potter are the only audiobooks I have and that is because I find it comforting to re-listen to these fun stories while I doing chores and things around the house. 🧙♂️

Great list! I keep thinking about getting the audiobook versions of Harry Potter purely because it’s Stephen Fry narrating! I have the complete collection of Sherlock stories which I adore.

I’d love to listen to the Harry Potter books sometime – I have Stephen Fry’s complete version of the Sherlock Holmes stories and love dipping into it. 🙂

The History of the Brittish Isles sounds good. I like Neil Oliver too, as I’ve watched a fair few of his documentaries over the years. I gave all my Harry Potter audiobooks to charity a few years ago when I was having a particularly ruthless clear-out, but I might start collecting them again on audable at some point if I ever fancy a bit of nostalgia.
