Hello my fellow bookworms and classic clubbers, first and foremost I must wish you and yours a very heartfelt Merry Christmas! π Wherever you are in the world and however you choose to celebrate, may this be a day full of joy, peace and love for you all. β€
This is also the second month of The Classics Club rebooted Classic Meme 2.0.Β There is no pressure to join in, as we all know how busy and stressful life is at the moment for many people, but if you feel like it, the idea is to have fun, talk classics and get a little social. So without further ado, here is the latest topic for us to ponder:
What is your favourite seasonal/Christmas/holiday classic? Why?
Well I think we can all see why I chose to save this topic up for Christmas Day! So let’s grab a warming drink, a mince pie and settle down to talk our favourite festive reads. π
I know I am as predictable as an old, well-loved record, but how could I not discuss the timeless classic, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for this topic?! Let’s face it, it is the quintessential tale of redemption, family, love and Christmas! In fact, many seasonal traditions now popular all over England and beyond come from the picture postcard image that Dicken’s conjured of a perfect Christmas. And if your not indulging in a re-read of this festive novella this year, then I bet you will be viewing one of its many wonderful film adaptations: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) being my personal favourite! π
Another festive favourite is the charming children’s classic, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, with its beautifully moralistic tale of four sisters and frankly it should make this post just for the famous quote: “‘Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,’ grumbled Jo, lying on the rug.” alone. π Also this post wouldn’t be complete without having discussed the magical children’s classic,Β The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, with its delightful images of a fawn with his umbrella below a lamp post in the snow and a delicious Christmas tea spread with Mr and Mrs Beaver. β
Ooo if I wasn’t already feeling the Christmas spirit, I certainly am now! I hope you enjoyed this post and if you have done a post of your favourite festive reads too, then please do feel free to share a link in the comments below, so we can come check it out! For now though, Merry Christmas!Β πππΌ
Now I’d love to hear from you: What do you think of my Christmas choices? Have you read any of these? What are your favourite festive reads?
I love Dicken’s christmas Carol and this year I listened to the audio version by Hugh Grant which was free to Audible members. I really enjoyed it and will be reviewing it soon.
Lynn π
Ooo great to hear you really enjoyed an audio listen of A Christmas Carol this holiday. I look forward to hearing your full thoughts on it. π
Three great choices! A Christmas Carol is my Christmas read too, though I seem to have read an awful lot of Christmas-themed horror and murder mystery stories over the last couple of weeks too – perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit! π
Thank you, FF – I am very glad you agree with all three of my choices! π I really must read some Christmas-themed horror and murder mystery stories for myself!
These are great choices! Next year I’d really love to read some classic Victorian ghost stories.
Julia Anne, I am so pleased you love all my choices, thank you, and I hope you will be able to read more classic Victorian ghost stories in 2021! π
Great choices…I only listed two, but had I listed a third it would probably have been A Christmas Carol. Although…this I read The Haunted Man and the Ghost’s Bargain – Dickens’ fifth of his Christmas Novellas. It may be favorite of the five. Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Joseph and great to hear you love all my choices.π I am also glad you enjoyed reading The Haunted Man and The Ghost’s Bargain this Christmas season – I really must read more of Dickens’ Christmas novellas.π
If you want a bit of fun, consider reading Christmas at Thompson Hall by Anthony Trollope, I can guarantee you won’t regret it ^^
Ooo thank you for the recommendation, Izabel – I will be sure to check out Christmas at Thompson Hall by Anthony Trollope further. π
Just last night I was thinking of that first line in Little Women. “Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents.” I can’t help thinking that Christmas isn’t really Christmas with COVID. Does that make me Scrooge? Merry Christmas to you anyway!
Oh no Judy that doesn’t make you Scrooge! It is totally understandable – I think we’ve all had enough of Covid-19 ruining everything! π And thank you π
Merry Christmas, Jessica! I don’t read a lot of festive books, but A Christmas Carol is my favourite too and I also love Little Women and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Great post and great choices!
Thank you, Helen and I am so pleased you enjoyed this post and my choices so much! π
Great choices! I’ve read them all, but the only one I ever read again is A Christmas Carol. It never gets old! I’m not sure I can pick a favorite film adaptation. Several come to mind…. George C. Scott, Patrick Stewart, Albert Finney…. I just don’t know!
May you have a blessed Christmas, Jessica!
Thank you so much, Kelly and I am so pleased you agree with all my choices in this post so much, especially the timeless A Christmas Carol. I think if you were to ask my dad he would choose the Albert Finney film adaptation as his favourite. π
