– Currently Reading –
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (1938) – It was a woefully slow start, due to my fatigue last week, but this week, I have really got on a roll with my re-read of this Gothic modern-classic. Losing myself in this stunning tale of the new, naïve Mrs de Winter, as she battles with the memory of her dominating predecessor, Rebecca; where my passion for this author all began. This is my second read for Ali’s Daphne du Maurier Reading Week 2020.
The Professor by Charlotte Brontë (1857) – I have continued to make myself read one or two chapters a day of this classic novel, that tells the story of the young professor William Crimsworth at an all-girl’s school. Unfortunately, while I sympathise with his situation, I am finding I don’t particularly like William! So it is a bit hard going, but I will persevere as it is relatively short and it was my result for The Classics Club recent Spin event.
The Favourite: Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough by Ophelia Field (2002) – I had sadly neglected this fascinating history of the life of this controversial favourite of Queen Anne, due to my du Maurier binge-reading-fest. However I am back on it now and been dipping in and out: finding out more of the real history behind the recent, critically-acclaimed film, The Favourite (2018); where Sarah was played by the brilliant Rachel Weisz.
Holy Bible – Finally, I have been dipping in and out of Numbers, Luke and the Psalms, as part of my church’s Morning Prayer livestreams.
– Recently Finished –
Holy Bible – I have finished reading 1 Kings, a chronicle of the early kings of Israel and Judah, in the Old Testament., and Romans, a collection of Paul’s letters to the early believers in Rome, in the New Testament.
Also, in the past week, I shared my review for the enchanting, Gothic adventure and family saga, The Loving Spirit by Daphne du Maurier, my first read for Ali’s Daphne du Maurier Reading Week 2020.
– Reading Next –
After my Daphne du Maurier splurge is over, I think I will just head back to my Spring TBR list and pick up the next review copy I have on there, which is Calysta and the Beast by Joanna Alonzo: the first book in new-to-me author, Alonzo’s The Sacred Scarred series: a modern-day, Christian retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

I’m currently reading Court of Miracles and enjoying it very much. Also listening to the Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires which I’m also really enjoying. Before that I read Silver in the Wood and Hollow Kingdom, the first is a short novella about the fae and the second is a bird’s eye view of the apocalypse and zombies. Next up I was hoping to read something from my backlist but haven’t decided yet.

Well the zombie apocalypse book is actually very light hearted and a bit tongue in cheek. Also quite funny in a lot of ways so you would probably enjoy it as it happens. 😁

Good luck finishing up The Professor. It’s not a book I’m familiar with and I don’t think I’m going to rush out and track it down! 😉

Rebecca was one of my favorite books in my teens, but I read it again last year, and found it difficult to get past the whiny heroine. Her voice really started to grate on my nerves after a bit, and I actually think her moral code was a bit off shall we say. I still think it is a great book over all though, and I’m glad you are enjoying your re-read.
Oh no, I really sorry to hear you found the new Mrs d Winter whiny on your re-read last year! I think I am the opposite! So far I have had more patience and sympathy for her reading it now I am older and, hopefully, wiser! 😉
